Boer Goats

Healthy Boer Goats

Boers are considered to be meat goats due to their strong muscles, rapid weight gain and excellent food conversion ratio.

Boar Goats tend to have heavy heads and shoulders with coarse legs and hooves.

The Boer bucks can also be crossed with dairy does, to improve meat characteristics in the resulting kids.

According to the British Boer Goat Society, Boer meat is lean with 3 oz. of meat having 122 calories and 2.58 grams of fat and low in cholesterol.

In terms of protein, goat has 23 grams in 3 ounces of meat, the same as beef and more than pork and chicken.

Goat meat also has the highest amount of iron at 3.2 mg, compared to 2.9 (beef), 2.7 (pork) and 1.5 (chicken).

Boer goats are heavy animals, with does normally weighing anywhere from 80 to 100 kilos and the bucks weighing well over 100 kilos (up to 150 kg).

The breed originated from South Africa. They were imported first to Germany in 1983 and then disseminated to the rest of Europe. Boer goats entered Britain in 1987.

In terms of temperament, Boers are docile. They are very fertile and require minimal care. In fact, it is said that they can easily withstand very cold weather with an open-sided shelter, with no troubles. Additionally, they are less susceptible to heat stress.

They are a compact goat, with a short coat that has fine quality hairs.

The Boer usually has a white body with a chestnut, or chocolate coloured head and neck.

Brindle Boers are characterised by a yellow head with brown patches around the eyes, cheeks and mouth.

White Boers are all white except for the head and neck, which is brown.
