Anglo-Nubian Goats – The Breed
Anglo-Nubians are a dual purpose goat, meaning that they can be used for both milk and meat.
Their milk is good for making both yoghurt as well as cheese, with an average of 4.8% butterfat and 3.8% protein. They produce around 4 to 5 kilos of milk a day.
They tend to weigh 140 kilograms for the males and 110 kilograms for the females, making them one of the heaviest goats. Kids put on weight quickly.
The breed has a mixed origin: Zariby goats from Egypt in the north of Africa and Jumnapari goats from India, which has been mixed with British goats. These goats prefer hot, dry weather.
The goats of this breed are characterised by a Roman nose and ears that hang down.

They normally have short and shiny coat that varies with roan and white predominating.
They are heavily fleshed animals with a layer of subcutaneous fat that protects them from adverse weather conditions.
Despite this, these goats are considered to be exceptionally hard to keep. It is said that they are more sensitive than other goats, more stressed and less resilient or robust. They are good for free-ranging and arable dairying.
On the other hand, they tend to be prolific and fecund goats with twins, triplets and even quadruplets being common.
As stated above, they have a good milk yield with good butterfat and protein percentages.
In terms of temperament, they are outgoing and vocal. They are also often stubborn.
The Anglo-Nubian Goat Breed Society was formed in 1972 to breed the goats to a higher breed standard.
