Goat's Teeth And Interesting Facts

Goats, similar to cows, have a full set of lower teeth, but no top front incisors. Instead they have a hard pad, which their bottom teeth rub against to mash forage.

However goats have both top and bottom back teeth, which are extremely strong.

You do not want to get your fingers caught and, when giving them toys to play with, such as balls they must be robust and very solid, as the goats will chew them. Ideally the dye of the ball mustn't come off as well.

Goats have two sets of teeth in their lifetimes, milk teeth and permanent, adult teeth.

They have 32 teeth in total with 6 lower incisors, 2 canine, 12 pre-molars and 12 molars.

Teeth develop even before birth, at around 98 to 105 days of gestation. They wear down in a relatively predictable pattern, which allows the age of a goat to be judged by the goat's teeth, although things like diet and health can change the pattern.

Year 1 - all incisors are small and sharp.

Year 2 - at around 12 months old, the two middle front teeth fall out and are replaced by two larger permanent teeth. These are the teeth marked 1 in the schematic above.

Year 3 - at around 24 months the teeth next to the middle ones fall out and are replaced by permanent teeth. These are the teeth marked 2 in the schematic.

Year 4 - The next two teeth on either side fall out. These are the teeth marked 3 in the schematic.

Year 5 - The last teeth, marked 4 on the schematic fall out and are replaced by the adult versions. All front teeth are now permanent and then begin to wear down.
