the most important person for the health care of your goats after
yourself, the goat keeper. Another thing to keep in mind is how well you
get along with the person. The veterinarian will be the person you turn
to in the worst times. They will be who you call in the middle of the
night when there is an emergency. It is best to get someone whose
bedside manner agrees with you.
Veterinarians will provide advice and guidance to you and preventative
health care as well as general and emergency health care for your goats.
They can be involved with your goats from even before purchase. Hire a
veterinarian when choosing which goats to purchase to make sure that you
make the best choice for you. This also helps in preventing any diseases
from entering onto your farm.
In terms of preventative health, the vet will also advise you on
everything from a vaccination and de-worming program to daily nutrition.
They are aware of what diseases are affecting goats in your area and if
there are any deficiencies relating to diet.
If you want to breed your animals, consult the vet to know what to do
and what to expect. The vet should come roughly 24 hours after kidding
to make sure that everything is alright with both the mother and the
kid.
If your goats do develop a disease, the veterinarian will be the one to
diagnose it. They are fundamental at this time because they are the only
professionals that can prescribe extra-label use of medications. It is
the law that drugs can only be used in animals, dosages and time
