Water And Goats

I have heard it said that goats get all the water they need from their food source, however this is NOT TRUE. They need a lot of water. They will drink from 2 to 4 litres a day of water normally. Goats that are producing kids and milk, will need even more. Goats will also need more water on hot days, just like humans and other animals.

Offer water to your goats in buckets, or containers, up off of the floor and well secured, where the goats cannot get their hooves into it. As goats do not like getting wet, try to keep buckets outdoors, not inside, where it will be knocked over constantly, which may result in their bedding and straw getting wet.

Make sure that the water is kept clean. If it comes from a natural water source on your property, have it tested before offering it to your animals. You can add wholesome cider vinegar, which is an excellent source of nutrition as well, or salt to the water to encourage the goats to drink more.

Goats are particular about their water's cleanliness, freshness and temperature. Part of your daily responsibilities revolve around cleaning the water buckets or containers and changing the water, or the goats will refuse to drink it.

In the winter, the goats will need to be provided with warm water. They will refuse to drink freezing water. Make sure that the water is slightly warm by heating the water with a portable electric heater, or simply add a kettle of hot water to their bucket.

Cleaning the bucket daily avoids any build-up of disease, or bacteria on the underside of the container.

Goats that do not drink will become dehydrated quickly. Dehydration will likely lead to causing health problems, including the formation of calculi, or stones and infections. Ensuring your goats drink plenty of water daily, will help to prevent illness. It also helps with rheumatism and other health problems. By making sure that your goats have access to an ample supply of clean fresh water, will help you to keep them healthy and happy.
